About Daniel-The Race 2016

On August 27, 2015, Daniel Takatani was in a terrible motorcycle accident. He was thrown 30-50 ft from his motorcycle and landed on the street without his helmet. He suffered severe brain trauma and multiple breaks and fractures of his femur/pelvis, arms, and wrists. He was unconscious and in a medically induced coma to help the bleeding go down in his brain. On August 28, 2015, while Daniel was still in a coma, his girlfriend went into labor and delivered their daughter around 9PM.

A week later, Daniel had undergone 2 surgeries to repair his broken and fractured bones, but was still sedated and on a ventilator. It was not until a couple of weeks after his surgery that Daniel had first opened his eyes.  However, he still could not speak as he now had a trach tube in his throat to help him breathe. Eventually, Daniel was able to breathe on his own and the doctors took the tube out. He was slowly regaining his memory and was finally able to eat real food.

Daniel was at Harbor UCLA Hospital for about a month until he was transferred to Rancho Los Amigos Rehabilitation Center. It was at Rancho where he finally got to meet his daughter Madison. He stayed at Rancho for about another month until he was discharged.

Daniel now receives outpatient PT, OT, and speech therapy at Rancho twice a week. He uses a walker, but will soon be getting a cane. He has already exceeded everyone’s expectations by recovering so quickly. The doctors didn't expect Daniel to even talk and be able to live a normal life. But he survived through that horrible accident, and continues to fight for his recovery everyday so he can be a father to his daughter.
